Gotye Streams Making Mirrors LP

August 20, 2011

Australian songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Wally De Backer unveiled one of our favorite new songs of the year, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” earlier this summer. Now the tune is available to stream along with De Backer’s full new Gotye LP, Making Mirrors.

While said single definitely remains a standout cut, the full collection boasts an impressive array of genre experiments, surprising arrangements, rare samples, and consistently varied instrumentation that should help make this a breakthrough moment for Gotye. Among its many inspired moments, “I Feel Fine” pushes De Backer’s soulful voice to new heights, in particular. Hear Making Mirrors, which was released this week, in its entirety below.

Meanwhile, Gotye also released a making-of documentary, which offers some intriguing insight into the process of recording the material — building compositions from the ground up with a combination of vintage analog instruments and digital recording techniques. Check it out along with the record after the jump.

Liam Gallagher Sues Noel Gallagher

August 19, 2011

Oasis may have split two years ago, but the rivalry between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher remains just as heated as ever. While promoting their respective side projects, Liam’s Beady Eye and Noel’s High Flying Birds, the English rockers have been in a war of words over the cause of the demise of their famous former group. Now, after Noel told reporters that they broke up because Liam was hungover, wanted to promote his clothing line in Oasis tour programs, and threw a plum before “wielding a guitar like an ax,” Liam is suing his brother for libel for claiming they pulled out of that night’s V Festival gig due to the previous night’s alleged bender.

“That is a lie and I want Oasis fans, and others who were at V, to know the truth,” said Liam in a statement stating that he had been diagnoses with Laryngitis by a doctor. “I was gutted when I couldn’t play the gig because I didn’t want to let the fans down.” Later, he added, “I tried to resolve [the disagreement] amicably but have been left with no choice but legal action. All I want is an apology.”

Meanwhile, Noel just released the first taste from one of his pair of forthcoming solo albums. As for whether or not he’s checked out the Beady Eye record by his current legal foe, Noel respectfully told Rolling Stone: “I’ve obviously not sat down and listened to it as as an album, but I’m aware of all of the songs, and it’s all right.” Sounds to me like a guy capable of an apology if one is warranted, but, as always with these two, it’ll be interesting to see what unfolds.

Lou Reed & Metallica Release Date Revealed

August 19, 2011

That surprise collaboration between former Velvet Underground leader Lou Reed and metal veterans Metallica is not only in the can, but the forthcoming LP now has a release date and official “this is really happening” promo photo to boot. The group’s new website, aptly located at loureedmetallica.com, went live this week, complete with a photo of the quintet wearing matching shades (left) and an announcement of the November 1 (North America) and October 31 (elsewhere) release.

“It’s may be the best thing done by anyone, ever,” Reed said of the project, which features songs he originally wrote for a stage version of Frank Wedekind’s Lulu. “It could create another planetary system. I’m not joking, and I’m not being egotistical.”

As of now, there’s no word on tour dates from Loutallica (“I don’t think Metallica want to be a band on Broadway!” Reed added of the oddball pairing of theater songs backed by metalheads), but something tells me that 2009 collaborative Rock Hall of Fame performance where they met won’t be their last. Until then, revisit “Sweet Jane” below.
