Neil Young Le Noise Documentary to Premiere at TIFF

August 23, 2011

The third film in a Neil Young documentary trilogy directed by Jonathan Demme will first hit screens in September, debuting at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival alongside rock docs From the Sky Down, a Davis Guggenheim-directed look at U2, and Cameron Crowe’s new film, Pearl Jam Twenty, a career retrospective on (Young pals) the titular grunge band.

According to THR, Demme’s third installment — following 2006’s Heart of Gold and 2008’s Neil Young Trunk Show — is comprised of footage filmed last spring during Young’s 2-night stand at Massey Hall, in which the living legend unveiled live versions of songs off his Daniel Lanois-produced Le Noise LP. The final chapter of Demme and Young’s film series is said to hit theaters (presumably upon gaining a distribution deal after its TIFF premiere) later in the year.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for the trailer and further release info, but in the meantime, revisit a front-row clip of Young jamming with the recently reunited Buffalo Springfield at Bonnaroo this summer below.

Decemberists Release New Video, Cover Leonard Cohen

August 23, 2011

Colin Meloy and Co. aren’t done promoting their excellent new LP, The King Is Dead, just yet, as another music video and an iTunes session (complete with a few new covers) have just hit the Web, not to mention the Decemberists will be performing a pair of pseudo-hometown concerts this week to close out a relentless run of touring this year.

First up, “Calamity Song” now has an official clip, directed by Michael Schur (of Parks and Recreation fame) and inspired by David Foster Wallace’s great novel Infinite Jest. While Meloy initially had trouble finding a director willing to take on the daunting task of channeling the Enfield Tennis Academy depicted in the book, Schur was thrilled with the idea of adapting part of his favorite DFW novel into a video. He told NPR: “Infinite Jest geeks will hopefully enjoy all of the specific references and small details, but we tried to design it so that those with no knowledge of the book at all would be able to understand and enjoy it, as well.”

In addition to the result of their “Calamity Song” video efforts, we’re also streaming a live take on “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” a cover off Leonard Cohen’s seminal debut LP, which the Decemberists also recorded for iTunes alongside their take on the Fruit Bats’ “When U Love Somebody” and other original songs. Below, you can hear a duet version of the tune recorded at a recent show, featuring Sara Watkins.

St. Vincent Announces Winter 2011 Tour Dates

August 20, 2011

Our favorite Tom Waits, Big Black, and Brian Eno-covering songwriter Annie Clark is set to hit the road in support of her forthcoming St. Vincent album, Strange Mercy. Unfortunately for those of us in America, St. Vincent hasn’t scheduled U.S. dates as of yet, but European fans will have a few opportunities to catch new single “Surgeon” and likely other new cuts along the 12-city jaunt this November and December.

So, without further ado, here are the dates: [Read more…]
