Lana Del Rey Video Games / Blue Jeans Single

August 19, 2011

Lana Del Rey, aka Lizzy Grant, will release her debut (sort of) single in October on 7″ vinyl via Stranger Records, complete with Track of the Year contender “Video Games” on the A-side and new, previously unheard tune “Blue Jeans” on the flip side. Details on Del Rey and the origins of her so-called “Hollywood sad-core” style have been left deliberately cryptic, but — after dozens of spins of the few tracks unveiled online over the past few months — we can safely say this lives up to every bit of the hype. “Video Games” not only boasts understated production and a pitch-perfect arrangement, but more than one of the most memorable melodies of the year as well. You can hear it below and pre-order the single here.

Meanwhile, a new music video for “Blue Jeans” is said to be on the way, so get acquainted with her current collection of vintage footage-themed clips and check back for the new one soon. *Update: Both tunes are below:

U2 Donate Millions to Ireland Music Education

August 19, 2011

Bono’s stock in Facebook may be worth an estimated value of $1 billion, but the U2 frontman and bandmates aren’t keeping all of their riches too themselves: This week, U2 donated $7.2 million dollars to Irish schools, Bloomberg reports, with the lion’s share going toward musical equipment and music teacher salaries. The remaining funds will go to charity organization Ireland Funds.

In other U2 News, Bono’s latest essay — following a series of op-ed pieces for the New York Times in 2009 — will pay tribute to fellow philanthropic entertainer Oprah Winfrey for a new book honoring her eponymous television show’s 25-year run.

And speaking of two decades ago, U2 are reissuing Achtung Baby for the seminal album’s 20th anniversary. Check out the massive (and pricey) collection due out in October here.

JEFF the Brotherhood Record 7″ w/ Jack White

August 19, 2011

Nashville duo JEFF the Brotherhood teamed up with Jack White and Third Man Records for a live album earlier this year, but Jake and Jamin Orrall have at least two more White-related projects on the way: a pair of tour dates opening for the recently reformed Raconteurs and a new 7″ single produced by our hero himself. As part of TMR’s Blue Series, JEFF the Brotherhood have recorded a “6 and 1/2 minute jam” dubbed “Whatever I Want,” backed by a rocking cover of Tiger B. Smith‘s 1972 song “Everything I Need.”

The single will arrive in early October. In the meantime, check out their tour itinerary here, their brand new TMR promo pic to the left, and get acquainted with their new video for “Wastoid Girl” video below:
