Kimya Dawson Recruits Nikolai Fraiture, Mountain Goats for Thunder Thighs LP

August 16, 2011

Former Moldy Peaches singer Kimya Dawson returns with a new LP this fall, complete with a few well-known friends: Thunder Thighs, a 16-track set featuring “pianos, backing choirs, string arrangements and several beats ” produced by Aesop Rock, arrives on October 25. Setting aside the lo-fi, anti-folk style of much of her earlier work, Dawson recruited a little help from the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle, Nikolai Fraiture of the Strokes, Bryan Danielson, Forever Young Senior Citizen Rock and Roll Choir, Olympia Free Choir, and others (including her young daughter, Panda).

Check out the cover art above. Also, below is the tracklist alongside a live clip of Dawson performing the title track by a chicken coop and the Fraiture-featuring track.

Ryan Adams 2011 Tour Dates: West Coast

August 16, 2011

European Ryan Adams fans won’t be the only ones to catch a live preview of his latest LP, Ashes & Fire, as our favorite L.A.-based singer-songwriter is hitting the road again this fall for a string of dates along the U.S. West Coast. Check out the full itinerary below.

Meanwhile, Adams took to Facebook recently to provide further details on the forthcoming record. Notably, the album was recorded using the same all-analog/live method that showcased the raw intensity of his earlier Ethan Johns-produced LPs. Working this time with Ethan’s father, Adams increased the anticipation level quite a bit with this statement:

It was produced by Glyn Johns ( rocknroll wizard & true gentleman). It has 11 songs on it. I played acoustic on all of them and sang and played live to tape. We recorded the album ALL 100 percent ANALOG ( 2″ tape mixed to 1/4″ ). A computer didn’t touch this album. It has very few overdubs. I gave these songs the most consideration I have ever given and it is certainly the longest amount of time I’ve spent writing. It was made with total love. Very excited. XX

Roy Harper to Release Career Retrospective: Songs of Love and Loss

August 15, 2011

British folk veteran Roy Harper has been praised by a ton of our favorite artists in recent years, such as Joanna Newsom, who has performed with and interviewed Harper, Fleet Foxes, and — possibly the most venerable of the lot — Jim O’Rourke. The timing is perfect, then, for a look back on his half-century-long career. Enter Songs of Love and Loss, a 2-volume set spanning 1966-92 arriving on September 19 this year (in conjunction with Harper’s 70th birthday).

Before you dig deeper into Harper’s vast and varied oeuvre, Salvo Records are offering a taste of the collection via two cuts — “Another Day” and “Francesca” — streaming below: [Read more…]
