Girls – “Honey Bunny”

August 25, 2011

Christopher Owens and Co. unleashed our second official taste off their forthcoming Girls LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, this week in the form of “Honey Bunny,” setting aside the brooding, psychedelic-rock-invoking debut single, “Vomit,” for surf-rock guitars that would make Dick Dale proud and sunny, more pop-friendly melodies.

“‘Honey Bunny’ was my 19th song to write,” Owens told NPR. “I wrote it on my birthday in 2008. I think the fact that it’s No. 19 gives it a little perspective. My first songs were kind of like, ‘Ahhhh, Help!’ This one has a bit of swagger to it, and some reflection about my mother.”

Check out a stream of the promising tune below. Meanwhile, Girls are set for an extensive fall tour, kicking off in September with a set at FYF Fest in Los Angeles, crossing North America, and then heading to Europe in November. You can read the full itinerary here.

The Dodos Share Free Live Album, Video

August 25, 2011

For all those reluctant to grab tickets for their upcoming U.S. tour, San Francisco indie-rockers the Dodos offered up a little (read: big) something to whet your appetite today: a free download of some pro-recorded audio from their May concert in Amsterdam. In exchange for an e-mail address, the Dodos will not only send the MP3s of the full set your way; they’ll enter your name for a chance to win tickets as well.

Meanwhile, Meric Long and Logan Kroeber also shared a new official music video for No Color cut “Good,” complete with tripped-out, monochromatic visual effects adorning the duo as they perform the tune on a bare-white soundstage.

New Ben Folds Five – “House”

August 25, 2011

Ben Folds reunited with former Ben Folds Five members Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee for their first new song as a trio in over ten years: “House,” an impressive ballad that recalls much of their best work together in the ’90s.

Their latest song arrives complete with an 18-track collection of standout cuts from Folds’ 20-year career, as well as on a 3-disc expanded edition of The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective. Other newly-recorded Ben Folds Five tracks — which were put to tape earlier in 2011 —  include “Tell Me What I Did” and “Stumblin’ Home Winter Blues.”

While the entire expansive set won’t be released until October 11, you can preview “House” today over at NBC. Folds’ new tune is being cross-promoted on the site for The Sing-Off, a new musical competition show co-starring Folds as a judge.
