Coldplay, Rihanna: Princess of China

October 17, 2011

With production by the great Brian Eno and a string of platinum-selling records to build on, the most anticipated track on Coldplay’s forthcoming LP, Mylo Xyloto, had less to do with Chris Martin’s latest set of heartfelt lyrics and memorable melodies or their experimental knob-twiddling pioneer; it was Rihanna’s contribution to “Princess of China,” a synth-drenched jam that hit the web over the weekend.

This one might be a bit more appropriate to the dance floor than as the seed of a sing-along anthem on Coldplay’s next stadium tour, but respect is certainly due here for the change of direction. Martin and co. have remained committed to treading new ground over the past decade and here’s further proof that their laudable forward-thinking efforts are paying off:

Lana Del Rey: “Video Games” (Balam Acab Remix)

October 16, 2011

Lana Del Rey’s debut single has been blowing up lately (well beyond its blogosphere-hyped beginnings): she made her television debut on Jools Holland, unveiled a clip for B-side “Blues Jeans,” and has now started to get the remix treatment from a number of big names. Today, Balam Acab dropped his take on “Video Games,” in which the economically arranged original gets pared down even further for an ethereal, synth-based version of this fall’s most catchy new number.

Stream the remix below or revisit the tune that got people talking in the first place here.

Drake SNL Video

October 16, 2011

Radiohead returned to Saturday Night Live recently for their first performance on the long-running show in over a decade, but tonight brought Drake’s debut, complete with sketch appearances, a “Weekend Update” cameo, digital short produced by Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island crew, and — of course — performance segments. If (and that’s a big “if”) the Canadian hip-hop star needed a chance to prove his multi-faceted talents, tonight was the night. What’s more, Nicki Minaj showed up for a live take on their new collaboration, “Make Me Proud,”  solidifying Drake and co.’s place among SNL’s esteemed canon in the musical department.

Here’s the proof (via Mr. World Premiere):
