Dhani Harrison ft. Regina Spektor – “Live A Lie”

August 31, 2011

Now that members of folk-rock super-trio Fistful of Mercy are exploring their respective solo projects, Dhani Harrison (whose legendary late father will be honored this fall with a new Scorsese-directed documentary) has gotten a chance to revisit his thenewno2 project: EP002, the appropriately titled 4-song set from the group will arrive on September 27, complete with a collaboration with Wu-Tang’s the RZA and piano-pop songstress Regina Spektor. The follow-up to their 2008 debut, You Are Here, which was recorded in Los Angeles and England, features original artwork by celebrated London street artist Ben Eine.

Below, you can preview two cuts off the record, “Live A Lie” and “Mr. President,” while a free download of the former, Spektor-assisted track is available on their Facebook page.

Jack White, Insane Clown Posse Record Single

August 31, 2011

Well, even for a guy packing plenty of surprises, we didn’t see this one coming from Jack White and his Nashville label: Third Man Records announced today that their next 7″ single release will star Detroit rappers Insane Clown Posse, produced by White himself and featuring an adaption of a tune by… Mozart. That’s right: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1782 canon “Leck Mich Im Arsch.” As you might imagine, appropriating that title into their new Mozart-inspired verses came naturally for  ICP’s Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. The A-side, which you can hear below, will hit iTunes and the Third Man store on September 13 along with B-side “Mountain Girl” (a so-called “twangy country song” about meth, moonshine, and shotgun weddings).

Willie Nelson – “The Scientist” (Coldplay Cover)

August 31, 2011

Just in case you needed another reminder of Willie Nelson’s ability to breathe new life into an old song, the living country legend has re-imagined Coldplay’s 2002 A Rush of Blood to the Head single “The Scientist” as a heartfelt ballad, replete with Willie’s inimitable melody variations and nuanced tone. As Stereogum points out, this new rendition was recorded for this week’s launch of the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, the fast food chain’s new organization that’s “working to improve individual family farms, animals and the environment, and youth and education programs.”

While the tune arrives with an unusual video starring animated farm animals, the clip is a bit distracting from Nelson’s laudable take, so check out just the song’s stream below.
