Bon Iver – Beth/Rest (Piano Version)

September 6, 2011

Justin Vernon set aside his Bruce Hornsby-channeling, synthesizer-driven studio take on the closing track to his new sophomore record, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, for NPR’s World Cafe recently, unplugging the tune with just a solo piano backing. The new version recalls his alternate version of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” we saw — and loved — earlier this year.

In addition to trading the keyboard for the ivories, Vernon varied his pitch more, alternating between his trademark falsetto and a breathy baritone. In short, this version is quite incredibly in its own right and well worth a couple spins. Check out below:

Video: Neil Young Journeys Preview

September 4, 2011

The third film in a trilogy of Jonathan Demme-directed documentaries on the great Neil Young will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, as previously reported. While we previously didn’t know the title — dubbing the project after Young’s Le Noise album, based on the era it was filmed — now the official title has been released, along with a teaser clip. Neil Young Journeys combines footage shot during a two-night stand at Massey Hall on the tour where Neil debuted Le Noise material live “with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors and their daughters.”

Based on a short video that recently hit the Web, which previews part of their ride through Omemee, Ontario and some remarkably high-quality live footage, I’d say this is a can’t-miss for Young fans and newcomers alike. Check out the clip below:

Scarlett Johansson & Lulu Gainsbourg – “Bonnie and Clyde”

September 4, 2011

A promising Serge Gainsbourg-related project that we first reported on back in March has finally come to light: From Lulu to Gainsbourg, a collaborative tribute album led by the late Gainsbourg’s surviving son, Lulu, will arrive on November 14, complete with guest vocals from the likes of Iggy Pop (who has drawn inspiration from Gainsbourg on recent efforts), Scarlett Johansson (aka Brigitte Bardot to Pete Yorn’s Serge on Break Up), Rufus Wainwright, Vanessa Paradis, and Marianne Faithfull.

We’ll have to wait a few months to hear the full tunes this impressive roster put to tape in the studio, but a taste of what’s to come arrived early in the form of “Bonnie and Clyde,” Gainsbourg’s 1968 duet with Brigitte Bardot as covered by Johansson and Lulu. Hear a snippet below:
