October 11, 2011

Andrew Bird will join the likes of Feist, Joanna Newsom, Paul Simon, and others for his second Muppets-related project of the year, following up his recording of Kermit the Frog favorite “Bein’ Green” with “The Whistling Caruso” on the official soundtrack to the forthcoming Amy Adams and Jason Segel-starring film The Muppets. In addition to performances by the lead cast of the Muppets flick, the OST features Feist singing backup vocals to “Life’s a Happy Song” alongside veteran entertainer Mickey Rooney and Joanna Newsom guesting on the theme tune, both of which were written by Flight of the Conchords actor Bret McKenzie.

Video: Mumford & Sons on Austin City Limits

October 3, 2011

It’s been a huge year for Marcus Mumford and this breakout British folk troupe, but victory laps keep coming. First, they famously jammed with Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers, then came television/radio broadcasts of new songs #1 and #2 (they’ve performed more fresh tunes live, which we’ll surely see on the sophomore record). And now comes a pivotal moment for any buzz band: the PBS broadcast of their Austin City Limits performance. We’ve seen Monsters of Folk, Band of Horses, and the National (whom they covered recently) rock the ACL stage, but here come some of the biggest folk-rockers from across the pond. Watch their 25-minute segment along with Flogging Molly (complete with interviews) above.

Drive Soundtrack Tracklist

September 17, 2011

drive soundtrackRyan Gosling’s run starring in films with impressive soundtracks continues this weekend as his latest flick, director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, hits screens — complete with an original score by Cliff Martinez that was inspired by ’80s-style, synth-pop. In addition to crafting his own compositions, Martinez built the film’s sonic landscape from ideas pioneered by European electronic bands, such as Kraftwerk. Other songs in the set — which were recorded and arranged with a similar retro edge —  include “Nightcall” by Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx of Brazilian dance-rock outfit CSS, a tune by the Chromatics, and others.
