Video: Ryan Adams, ‘Lucky Now’ (Live on Skavlan)

November 13, 2011

In which our hero does what he does best: bringing tears to the eyes of onlookers as he performs a pitch-perfect and inspired live take on a brilliantly bittersweet new tune. Sure, he killed this Ashes & Fire cut on Conan, not to mention the official video and studio takes proved its worth as a single, but here’s where “Lucky Now” shines the brightest for me. Seated unusually close to the show’s guests and host, Fredrik Skavla, Adams cut through the Norwegian/Swedish television program’s jovial vibe, armed only with his well-honed songwriting craftsmanship, understated guitar work, and a nuanced vocal agility that few others are pulling off nowadays.

Coldplay on Saturday Night Live, 2011, Video

November 13, 2011

Coldplay rounded out an epic run of promotional television appearances tonight with a trio of segments on what’s perhaps the most celebrated show of the lot: Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock’s classic sketch comedy program that Chris Martin and co. have joined three times previously. In addition to performing obligatory Mylo Xyloto cuts “Paradise” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,” Martin got decked out in a blonde wig and decorative vest for a Weekend Update skit co-starring Portlandia‘s Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig as Garth and Kat. His comic timing and foray into acting was quite impressive, actually, perhaps aided by the fact that Armisen has a long history of collaborations with famous musicians.

Video: Lana Del Rey, ‘Blue Jeans’ (Live)

November 12, 2011

We’ve heard her breakout single, “Video Games,” in live and studio form, but now some HQ footage of Lana Del Rey performing the tune’s B-side has arrived. Thanks to French television program Le Grand Journal, we can watch Del Rey show off her sultry, so-called “Hollywood sadcore” vocal chops with soundboard-quality audio and pro-shot visuals. The few shaky live appearances we’ve seen so far were apparently outliers —  or, perhaps, she’s becoming more confident on stage — as this take brings the charisma and polish of the released version while including a few spontaneous flourishes to keep things fresh.

Without further ado, watch Del Rey shut down the haters and prove she’s worthy of the hype below:

Del Rey’s debut album, possibly titled Born to Die, is in the works for release next year via Interscope.
