Joe Strummer Biopic, The Right Profile, Directed by Julie Delpy

November 23, 2011

A year ago (almost to the day), we reported that a biopic based on the late, great Joe Strummer is in the works, and now we’ve learned that the project is moving forward with a somewhat unexpected director: Julie Delpy. As big fans of Before Sunrise/Sunset, 2 Days in Paris, and Delpy’s music, this news comes as a pleasant surprise. Few other details about the project were revealed today by Variety, yet — as noted previously —  Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll screenwriter Paul Viragh was tapped to pen the script at one point with a story aimed at covering the former Clash frontman’s life, including his step back from the public stage in the early ’80s.

In other Delpy-related news, a sequel to 2 Days in Paris and the next installment of the Before series are also being prepped — the former featuring a turn by Chris Rock and the latter being written this year with co-star Ethan Hawke.

Leonard Cohen, ‘Old Ideas’ Tracklist

November 22, 2011

Details on Leonard Cohen’s forthcoming Old Ideas LP have finally arrived: 10 new tunes, which include a pair of songs debuted live on recent tours, will be released on January 31st via Columbia Records. Per a description sent to the press, the lauded poet/songwriter’s latest effort will “address some of the most profound quandaries of human existence – the relationship to a transcendent being, love, sexuality, loss and death,” in addition to being “arguably the most overtly spiritual” record of his inimitable oeuvre so far.

We’ll be discussing this — the most highly anticipated release in years around here — more tomorrow (when a stream of “Show Me the Place” becomes available), but in the meantime, let’s get psyched by checking out the album cover above and tracklist below. Update: “Show Me the Place” has arrived.

Video: Gotye, Kimbra Live on KCRW

November 22, 2011

We’ve been patiently waiting for months to see how Gotye’s hit Making Mirrors single “Somebody That I Used To Know” would translate live — especially alongside Kimbra, the female lead voice in this tune’s breakup narrative. Now we have the perfect take to soak in: the Australian singer-songwriter with his New Zealand-born guest performing the smash in KCRW‘s intimate Los Angeles studio.

As it turns out, Gotye and Co. have worked out a live rendition that is remarkably consistent with the studio recording, complete with samples, keyboard patches, percussion, and a pair of vocal performances that don’t require studio magic to be ready for the radio. Fortunately for those of us not in the Southern California area, the radio station shared footage of this inspired version. Making Mirrors is still streaming in full here, and the live clip of “Somebody That I Used To Know” is above.
