Trey Anastasio Symphony Tour 2012

November 28, 2011

Trey Anastasio has announced 4 solo concert dates for next year, described by the Phish guitarist as his “first-ever orchestral tour.” In each U.S. City on the jaunt — Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Denver, and Los Angeles — Anastasio will be joined by a guest symphony from the region for orchestrations of tunes from the Phish oeuvre as well as solo pieces.

Without further ado, here’s the 4-city “Winter Symphony Tour 2012” itinerary:

February
09 | Atlanta, GA @ Atlanta Symphony Hall w/ Atlanta Symphony
14 | Pittsburgh, PA @ Heinz Hall w/ Pittsburgh Symphony
28 | Denver, CO @ Boettcher Concert Hall w/ Colorado Symphony

March
10 | Los Angeles, CA @ Walt Disney Hall w/ Los Angeles Philharmonic

In other Anastasio news, 2012 will also bring the debut of Trey’s first musical, Hands on a Hardbody, a stage adaptation of a 1997 documentary about an endurance competition in which contestants try to win a truck by keeping their hands on the vehicle for the longest period of time. Black Swan actor/dancer Benjamin Millepied has joined the project as a choreographer for the musical theater project and Amanda Green has co-written tunes with Anastasio. One song reportedly set to appear in the stage show is “Burn That Bridge,” which has already been performed live. While you’ll have to wait until next spring to see the show when it debuts in La Jolla, California, today you can watch Anastasio and his band road-test that tune in the clip below:

Flight of the Conchords Movie Needs a Story

November 28, 2011

While promoting his impressive work on the soundtrack to this holiday weekend’s biggest blockbuster, The Muppets, Bret McKenzie has gotten fans of his great music-driven cult series, Flight of the Conchords, into a frenzy with the following quote: “We’re gonna try and do a movie,” he said (via Collider). “We just need a story.”

Fellow Conchords alumn Jemaine Clement has yet to chime in on the potential project, but consider our interest for a reboot of the short-lived series piqued. In the meantime, this week’s Muppets hit has — at the very least — earned McKenzie a well-deserved career in penning songs for film that should instill even the likes of Oscar regular Randy Newman with respect for the New Zealand comic-musician. To wit, this clip of him singing alongside (Andrew Bird’s favorite Muppet) Kermit the Frog for a rendition of “Life’s a Happy Song” recently caught our eyes/ears (via NYT). In the film, stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams do the tune’s honors, but here’s both its writer and a ‘living’ felt legend giving the song a run-through behind the scenes:

Fugazi Live Archive Launch Imminent

November 26, 2011

Dischord Records are finally ready to begin rolling out their massive digital live archive for Fugazi after first revealing the project last year. As The New York Times reports, over 1,000 shows from the band’s 15-year run have been added to a live index, with 130 being made available for purchase starting this Thursday and a total of about 800 recordings on the way. The band are charging a suggested price of $5, though — in a Radiohead-esque pay-what-you-want model — concert audio can be bought for just one dollar or a donation of any amount above that.

What’s more, an all access pass will include every gig currently available in addition to future uploads. That option isn’t cheap, though, as it’s going for a wallet-punishing $500.

This has been a big week for Fugazi co-frontman Ian MacKaye with both the launch of this daunting endeavor and the return of his duo with Amy Farina, the Evens. Here’s hoping it’s just the start to another awesome era in Dischord’s history. So, without further ado, you can check out the archives and create an account to go live later this week here.
