Video: Iron & Wine on Leno

December 1, 2011

Sam Beam and friends returned to The Tonight Show moments ago for the TV debut of a live version to their new song featured on the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Soundtrack, “Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Wedding Version).” In short, we’re impressed — and pleasantly surprised — that such a hushed, nuanced ditty landed a spot on the OST of a blockbuster franchise like the Twilight saga. But, then again, all it takes is one spin through Iron & Wine’s inspired take below to feel the haunting undercurrent that earned the cut’s spot in a popular romance-meets-horror flick.

Either way, we’d like to inspire all of the new doom-folk fans we can find around here, so without further ado let’s revisit this evening’s best specimen of chilling beauty above (via).

Bon Iver Grammy Nominations Announced

December 1, 2011

Bon Iver, Bon Iver, this year’s self-titled sophomore LP from Justin Vernon, is about to gain some serious recognition from an even broader group than its current — notably vast — indie fan base: Grammy nominations for single “Holocene” and Bon Iver itself are piling up tonight, with the tally settling on four:

– “Holocene” is nominated for both Record and Song of the Year, facing competition from the likes of Adele, Katy Perry, (Vernon’s buddy) Kanye West, and British folk-rock upstarts Mumford & Sons.

– Bon Iver is up for Best New Artist, versus Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, J. Cole, and others. The notable bit here is that Vernon’s lauded breakout debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, came out over 3 years ago.

– The LP is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, facing Radiohead, Death Cab, and My Morning Jacket.

We’ll be parsing the full list of nominations here for other standouts/surprises, but in the meantime, congrats to Vernon and co. for penetrating the mainstream with this excellent “studio magic”-free, nuanced set.

Chairlift, ‘Met Before’

November 30, 2011

Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly unveiled a second cut from their forthcoming second LP as Chairlift, Somewhere, today, following up last month’s “Sidewalk Safari” with a new synth-driven gem dubbed “Met Before.” The NYC group also released video treatment for the track “Amanaemonesia” earlier in the year, which brings our total number of promising previews of this effort up to three. All sneak peek’s considered, this collection feels wonderfully fresh so far, complete with unexpected arrangements, memorable melodies, and a diverse array of rhythmic textures that should keep dancefloors at the band’s upcoming gigs packed. We’re looking forward to hearing these tunes in the context of the full album arriving in January, but for now, let’s get psyched with a trio of cuts below:
