Punch Brothers Announce ‘Who’s Feeling Young Now?’ LP

December 23, 2011

As big fans of Punch Brothers’ Jon Brion-produced Antifogmatic album, we were thrilled to hear this week that they’ve teamed up with another awesome producer for their next full-length release: Who’s Feeling Young Now?, a 12-track set produced by Jacquire King (a man who’s helmed the boards for Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and many other notables), will arrive on February 14 of next year via Nonesuch. Recorded at Nashville’s renowned Blackbird Studios, the record was put to tape in just three weeks time.

Given that these guys have unleashed many masterful takes on Radiohead in the past, it’s particularly exciting to see that a cover of “Kid A” has made the cut alongside original tunes and other cover renditions. What’s more, one of our favorite alt-country singer-songwriters of the past few years, Josh Ritter, joined band leader Chris Thile, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny, Paul Kowert, and Chris Eldridge to co-write two new songs: “Hundred Dollars” and “New York City.”

We’re looking forward to hearing the full set come Valentine’s Day, but in the meantime a delicious preview is here in the form of the title track, now streaming and available to download in exchange for an e-mail address below:

The Weeknd, ‘Echoes of Silence’ Download

December 22, 2011

The final act of the Weeknd’s 2011 trinity — following House of Balloons and Thursday — just arrived via Abel Tesfaye himself on Twitter. Titled Echoes of Silence, the 9-track set features a take on Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” dubbed “D.D,” a song produced by Clams Casino called “The Fall,” and 7 more cuts ready to shake up the blogosphere and beyond over the holiday, uh, weekend.

Given the big opportunities this Tumblr/Twitter-catalyzed project has produced so far, we now have further proof that undeniable talent and open sharing on the web has nearly replaced the potential of previous music industry models. So, without further ado, go grab this free record and let the (also free) viral marketing take flight thataway.

The tracklist is below:

Video: Fred Armisen Does Thom Yorke Impression

December 19, 2011

At this point, it seems that no famous musician is safe if they make a blip on the radar of Jimmy Fallon. We’ve seen the Late Night host break out the best Neil Young impression to date, portray Bob Dylan covering the Charles in Charge theme, mimic Jim Morrison, and lampoon a host of other notable rock legends. But what about artists from the modern era? Fallon’s hosting gig on Saturday Night Live found him bringing a few more up-to-date impersonations to the table — most notably,  Justin Bieber and Sting, along with the debut of Fred Armisen portraying Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

While Yorke remains inimitable in the vocals department, Armisen channeled his jittery dance moves (particularly during the post-Atoms for Peace/The King of Limbs era) with fairly spot-on results. The conceit of the sketch was a Michael Bublé duets holiday album, which features a number of notables that various SNL cast members and Fallon could decently imitate: Sting, Ke$ha, Bieber, Kanye West, M.I.A., and others. Check out the replay above (Armisen’s Yorke arrives around the 2:15 mark).
