Laura Marling Unveils “The Beast” Poem, Interactive Website

January 5, 2012

What with all the new songs she’s been debuting live of late — not to mention that Ryan Adams duet at Abbey Road — it’s been a while since we’ve given Laura Marling’s most recent LP, A Creature I Don’t Know, its due as one of the best folk records of last year. Now comes a great chance to revisit the set: “The Beast,” the record’s fifth track, now has a corresponding — or “re-appropriation” in the form of a — poem. “The first line of the poem was essentially what sparked the ideas behind the album,” she told Q Magazine, adding later: “It came from a quote from Thomas Jefferson that I came across in a book called Sisters Of Fortune, talking about the abolition of slavery We have the wolf by the ears and we can neither hold him nor safely let him go. Blind plagiarism.”

Rather than publish “The Beast” in a literary magazine, write it out for a single’s liner notes, or employ another more traditional medium to share the piece, Marling has gone the new media route: registering the domain name The-bea.st for an interactive website featuring illustrations integrated with the text. Notably, the song bearing the same title on the LP does not stream and isn’t even mentioned on the site, making Marling’s foray into poetry a much more committed endeavor than simply a promotional event for what could be a single (FWIW, this is our favorite cut on the record).

So, without further ado, hear/read “The Beast,” narrated by Old Crow Medicine Show’s Gill Landry, thataway.

Jack White ‘American Pickers’ Episode Next Week

January 3, 2012

Following in the footsteps of his pal Bob Dylan (who made a surprise cameo on Pawn Stars last year), Third Man Records leader Jack White will be stopping by a cable television reality show. American Pickers — History Channel’s program about a pair of guys finding hidden treasures at garage sales, junkyards, and other places where discarded “trash” might be found — will feature a guest appearance by the Dead Weather/Raconteurs singer-guitarist on their January 9 episode. Airing at 9PM EST, the show was filmed in Nashville at TMR headquarters, where hosts Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz will attempt to buy a number of items from Jack’s vaults, including a photo booth from the Dead Weather’s “Hang You From the Heavens” video — said to be the biggest item featured in the segment.

Who knows what Jack’s got in store for us on his latest non-musical cable TV cameo, but we’ll certainly be tuning in come Monday night. In the meantime, get reacquainted with the phone booth (and the Dead Weather’s killer single) in the clip below. *Update* Here’s a preview segment, as well:

Scissor Sisters, ‘Shady Love’

January 2, 2012

Scissor Sisters’ new single, “Shady Love,” arrived today, sounding destined to be a 2012 dancefloor/pop radio favorite. But before you hit the club or attempt your first steering-wheel-drum-jam-along, you’re going to want to catch its new music video. Directed by Hiro Murai, the clip’s concept is based on a wonderfully odd play by the fictional “Northwest Lake Elementary School,” complete with Madonna and President Obama masks, a kid lip-syncing as Jake Shears, baffled parents, and choreography galore.

In short, this is a great way to kick off the year with what’s sure to be an enduring, memorable clip over the next few months. Check out the tune below:
