Craig Finn, ‘New Friend Jesus’

January 12, 2012

Back in November, we got our first taste off the debut LP from the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn in the form the promising cut “Honolulu Blues.” Now, just two weeks beforeĀ Clear Heart Full Eyes arrives in full, we have another glimpse at the literary bar-rocker’s solo project: “New Friend Jesus” arrived this week, complete with a shuffling, country/rock-driven backup band and some familiarly narrative lyrics from the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Minnesota songwriter.

Without further ado, you can pre-order the forthcoming set here and give the latest cut a spin thataway.

Trailer: LCD Soundsystem Documentary

January 11, 2012

The James Murphy-led NYC outfit LCD Soundsystem went out with a bang last year, surprisingly opting to split while the group was at its highest level of popularity to date. While their break up culminated with some glorious yet bittersweet farewell concerts in their home base, now you’ll have a chance to relive the events leading up to their big 2011 announcement, the fallout, the final shows, and a look behind the scenes with their new documentary, Shut Up and Play The Hits. The film premieres later this month at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah, but today brings a preview of what’s to come in the form of an official trailer.

Directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern, this teaser promises an insider’s fly-on-the-wall glimpse behind the curtain along with plenty of pro-shot live footage and bits of future nostalgia-inducing moments for fans present during LCD’s heyday. Check it out above.

The Kills Prep ‘Last Goodbye’ EP

January 11, 2012

Not only did the Kills unveil an impressive set of original material in 2011 with their fourth studio LP, Blood Pressures, but Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince have also been showing off some prowess in the cover song department in recent memory. Now three renditions — their takes on Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” Velvet Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes,” and a tune made famous by Marilyn Monroe called “One Silver Dollar” — will be released in a limited edition vinyl EP fronted by their latest single, “The Last Goodbye.” (That Blood Pressures cut remains a favorite from the set ever since we caught this stunning live rendition last spring.)

According to a listing on Music Direct (h/t David), the 4-track 10″ record will arrive on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, via Domino Records. Teased as a highlight of the duo’s “sentimental and timeless side,” this release — in addition to a forthcoming live film — would be a perfect way to bookend the band’s excellent recent effort, I’d say, not to mention their post-Dead Weather boost in popularity. No official announcement has been made yet, but as we wait for further possible details, revisit the aforementioned in-studio radio session below. Update: An official video for “The Last Goodbye” just arrived.
