Trailer: Moonrise Kingdom

January 13, 2012

The trailer for Wes Anderson’s first live-action film since The Darjeeling Limited, the Alexandre Desplat-scored Moonrise Kingdom, arrived today in all its whimsical, meticulous glory we’ve come to expect from the wonderfully consistent director. In the 2-minute teaser, we get our first glimpse of Anderson’s latest group of collaborators — Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Ed Norton, Tilda Swinton, etc. — as well as some familiar faces from his previous efforts, namely Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.

Co-written with Darjeeling collaborator Roman Coppola, the film promises a quirky tale revolving around a kid running away from Boy Scout camp, played by newcomer Jared Gilman in his debut film role. As you may recall, Jason Schwartzman — now a successful movie and television actor, not to mention mastermind behind music project Coconut Records — was also discovered by Anderson at a young age when he was plucked from relative obscurity to star in 1998’s Rushmore.

The jury’s out on whether Gilman will follow in Schwartzman’s footsteps, but based on this promisng preview, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just the start of an impressive career — even if that only means becoming a permanent member of Anderson’s loyal family of actor/collaborators. Without further ado, get psyched for one of our most anticipated, music-related films of 2012 by checking out the clip above.

Flaming Lips Recruit Nick Cave, Bon Iver for LP

January 13, 2012

For the past year or so, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne has been sharing bits of info about a few high-profile collaborations that the band have in the works — even going so far as to attempt recruiting famous guests publicly on Twitter. Now this intriguing project, specific details of which were previously unknown and likely up in the air, appears to be coming to fruition with a number of tracks revealed to be in the can and more on the way.

“All these things happen within a couple of days,” Coyne told Rolling Stone of their team-ups so far with the likes of Nick Cave, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Edward Sharpe (with whom the Lips performed alongside in a cemetery last year), Neon Indian, and Yoko Ono. “You set up these [collaborations] in your mind and immediately get to work.”

In addition to the aforementioned artists, Coyne is attempting to recruit Ke$ha, Lykke Li, and Erykah Badu for the album, tentatively due out in April. We’ll keep an eye out for further details as this project progresses, but in the meantime, revisit the Lips performing “Do You Realize??” with Ed Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes below:

Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween): Marvelous Clouds

January 12, 2012

A follow-up to Ween’s 2007 LP, La Cucaracha, isn’t on the immediate horizon, but fans of the duo’s lead singer (one of the most underrated vocalists around, in my book), Gene Ween, have a treat arriving this spring: Marvelous Clouds, Gene’s debut solo album under his given name of Aaron Freeman, was announced today. As AV Club reports, the forthcoming Ben Vaughn-produced set will be a tribute record to poet/songwriter Rod McKuen, who also has a song called “The Marvelous Clouds.”

Aside from the release date (April 10), further details are scarce at the moment, but for now we have a preview of Freeman singing an acoustic take on McKuen’s “Jean” below. *Update: Here’s the first single:
