Lisa Hannigan: “What’ll I Do” Video

January 18, 2012

We’ve seen Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan perform a stunning, busking-style live take on the title track and watched a visual interpretation of “Knots” in which paint represented the single’s instrumental arrangement, but now another whimsical official clip from her sophomore LP, Passenger, has arrived: “What’ll I Do” finds Hannigan doing her best to lip-sync lyrics while taking a roller-coaster ride (not unlike Wye Oak’s Coney Island-set “Holy Holy” video a bit).

As is often the case when enjoying a Hannigan performance — that’s lip-synced or otherwise — her upbeat, carefree attitude is incredibly infectious. So, without further ado, check out this new Michael Kelly and Pauline Rowan-filmed video below and try not to beam your way through the rest of the clip after she nearly loses her hat while coasting through Funderland.

Ben Kweller Debuts “Mean to Me”

January 18, 2012

Our first taste of Ben Kweller’s forthcoming LP, Go Fly a Kite, arrived today in the form of a tasty, 3-minute bite of power-pop called “Mean to Me.”

“The chorus says, ‘You don’t know what you mean to me,'” Kweller told SPIN, explaining the tune’s optimistic reaction to some personal drama in Australia, “which can be can be about holding in negative feelings towards someone, but in my mind this chorus is for everyone I’ve loved, who’s been there for me in the past.”

The record this promising cut was plucked from will hit stores on February 7 as the inaugural release off Kweller’s own label, Noise Company. We’re looking forward to hearing more, but for now, dig into some crisp guitars, catchy hooks, and the outro’s gloriously horn-backed harmonies with “Mean to Me” below:

Video: Blake Mills Covers Bob Dylan on Conan

January 18, 2012

Blake MillsEmerging singer-songwriter (and one of our favorite young guitar players around) Blake Mills landed a high-profile spot on Conan O’Brien’s TBS show last night, performing his contribution to Amnesty International’s Bob Dylan covers charity compilation, Chimes of Freedom. Despite the fact that Dylan remains one of the most oft-covered musicians of the past five decades, Mills brought his own spin to the format and truly proved that the daunting task of taking on the poet laureate of rock is often a worthwhile endeavor. In short, he completely killed it. Along with Danielle Haim’s formidable skills on simultaneous backup vocals and drums, Mills went for a more obscure cut, 1990 Shot of Love tune “Heart of Mine,” showcasing some inspired lead slide runs and vocals that recall Dylan’s notoriously smooth-throated Nashville Skyline era.

So, without further ado, get acquainted with Mills and Co. below (via Audio Perv):

Pretty good stuff, right? If you dig this kind of thing, Mills has an LP out now and a great introductory 7″ available via Analog Edition.
