Jenny Owen Youngs Debuts “Your Apartment” Video

January 20, 2012

Jenny Owen Youngs returns next month with her latest LP, An Unwavering Band of Light, a Dan Romer-produced set said to explore more live sounds and “grittier percussion” than her previous estimable efforts. Our first taste, single “Your Apartment,” certainly offers a boost in raw energy — complete with drums present upfront in the mix, hummable hooks galore, and a melodic nod (intentional or otherwise) to Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” in the verses.

In short, this is some fine pop music that we’d imagine will bring a host of new Youngs fans into the fold. What’s more, the tune’s new official lyric video — with its shadowy still-life view of an ambiguous urban setting lit up like an “Open” sign with the song’s glowing words — fits the tone quite well. Get to know the latest cut from one of the more promising emerging singer-songwriters around with the clip below:

Video: Avett Brothers Cover Bob Dylan on Fallon

January 20, 2012

While we wait for the Avett Brothers’ forthcoming Rick Rubin-produced follow-up to I and Love and You to arrive, the boys stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a take on “One Too Many Mornings” by their Grammys collaborator, the great Bob Dylan. This week’s performance from the Avetts follows an earlier Dylan-covering appearance by Blake Mills on Conan, both of whom are making the rounds to promote next Tuesday’s release of Amnesty International’s new charity tribute set, Chimes of Freedom.

For their rendition, the Avett Brothers stuck reverently close to the country-folk vibe of the original — which incidentally was Steve Jobs’ favorite Dylan cut — complete with traded off lead vocals between Scott and Seth that mirror the Johnny Cash duet version a bit. A fine take, for sure, but we must admit this just has us itching for that next Avetts LP even more. While we wait, let’s watch the North Carolina troupe honor a mutual hero below (via Audio Perv):

Video: Obama Sings “Let’s Stay Together”

January 20, 2012

YouTube mashup artist Baracksdubs may have gone viral this week by splicing together clips of President Obama to form an interpretation of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” but now some better source material has arrived: Speaking at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater in New York City, Obama honored Reverend Al Green with both a few words and a sung line from the iconic soul singer’s most famous hit, “Let’s Stay Together.”

Not only does he nail the impression (with decent vocal chops to boot), but the tune’s titular refrain fits perfectly in line with the incumbent president’s re-election campaign message. Without further ado, watch the commander-in-chief channel a 1971 classic above.
