Watch: Bruce Springsteen SXSW Keynote

March 18, 2012

Given that Bruce Springsteen has turned in some of the most memorable, insightful, and hilarious Rock Hall of Fame induction speeches over the years — not to mention spoken-word moments in the middle of “Growin’ Up” — it should come as no surprise he did just that for the keynote in Austin last week. With thousands of bands performing across town, most of whom hoping for a big break, the Boss discussed his own journey from emerging artist to rock star, his early influences, and the enduring spirit of creativity.

Summarizing the tone and breadth of this thing further would do it a disservice, so without further ado, get inspired by the Boss below:

Video: Bon Iver Covers Anais Mitchell + Official Video

March 16, 2012

Anais Mitchell’s 2010 collaboration with Justin Vernon, “Wait For Me,” was one of our favorite tracks of that year. And while this year’s follow-up to Hadestown is Bon Iver-less in the guest department, Vernon is back anyway to throw his support behind the record with a cover of its latest single. “Coming Down,” a gorgeous ballad and one of many standouts on Young Man In America, was interpreted by Vernon on today’s installment of Triple J radio program Like A Version. Check out a clip, in which he praises Mitchell’s new LP and performs the tune, below. We also have the track’s poignant official video, directed by Jay Sansone, who provided “old 16 mm footage that [he] discovered in some rust spattered metal canisters between tattered boxes of LP records in [his] Grandmother’s basement.”

Video: Fiona Apple Plays New Songs at SXSW

March 15, 2012

As we’re gearing up for our own day party at SXSW that kicks off in just 10 hours(!), a nice Waynestock eve surprise happened down the street: Fiona Apple unveiled a first preview of her fourth LP, The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do. Performing among a lineup that included fellow faves Andrew Bird, Sharon Van Etten, and Alabama Shakes, Apple worked a trio of new tunes into her live set for NPR’s showcase: “Anything We Want,” “Valentine,” and “Every Single Night.”

While clips of all three are likely to arrive soon, tonight we have two promising early listens below. *Update: “Valentine” has been added:

“Valentine”

“Anything We Want”

“Every Single Night”

Also of note, Apple has a new live lineup, consisting of Blake Mills, Patrick Warren, Sebastian Steinberg, and Amy Wood.
