Fiona Apple to Release New Music in 2012

January 24, 2012

Great news: Epic Records chief L.A. Reid just announced that new music from Fiona Apple, which has been in the works since fall of 2010, will arrive “in the next few weeks.” While there’s no word at this time whether the forthcoming release will be a full-length album, EP, or single (Reid left details scant, simply teasing that “good music [is] coming” from Apple), it’s looking like 2012 will be a big year for fans patiently awaiting a follow-up to Apple’s 2005 LP, Extraordinary Machine. Update: A separate spokesperson for Epic Records has clarified that a studio album from Apple will “absolutely be this year, but timing wise, I don’t know exactly when.”

We’ll have to wait a bit longer for a taste of what’s to come, but for now, behold the tweets heard around the world (screencap thanks to FYFA):

For a possible description of the “challenging” songs on Apple’s LP4, revisit quotes from an interview with Apple herself and collaborator/drummer Charley Drayton that we posted many moons ago here.

Video: Wilco on Conan

January 24, 2012

We saw Wilco perform a full live set comprised of tunes from their eighth studio LP, The Whole Love, as well as back catalog cuts for an hour-long webcast on Letterman’s Late Show last fall, but tonight they found time in their busy touring schedule for a stop on cable television. Celebrating the eve of their new iTunes session release, Jeff Tweedy and Co. performed twice for Conan O’Brien’s TBS crowd, once for a web-exclusive take on “Dawned On Me” and again for the official broadcast.

While the latter hasn’t aired yet, Team Coco have shared the former performance early. We’ll update with the second clip soon, but in the meantime, enjoy Nels Cline shredding on his double-neck guitar for a tight-knit rendition of their iTunes session’s opening track below. Update: We now have the aired segment, Wilco doing the The Whole Love‘s title track, as well.

Neil Young, Crazy Horse Recording Again

January 24, 2012

It’s been 16 years since Neil Young and original Crazy Horse members have released an album together (setting aside 2003’s Frank Sampedro-less Greendale), but now the Godfather of Grunge has reconvened the classic lineup for new music and possibly an upcoming tour. Thrasher’s Wheat reports and Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina confirmed that the group already have one record in the can while another set is in the works for a potential 2012 release.

As huge fans of their iconic contribution to rock music — from 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere to a personal favorite 1991 live set called Weld — we’re incredibly excited for this development. That said, as Rolling Stone notes, Young rarely plans too far ahead and the project could shift direction at any moment.

Today’s big news arrived from Young himself at Park City, Utah’s Slamdance Festival, where he and director Jonathan Demme are promoting the final film in their collaborative trilogy, Journeys. While we wait for more details further down the line, join us with a 1978 rendition of “Like A Hurricane” — featuring one of the most influential 6-string solos on this guitarist/writer — below:
