Watch: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Studio Stream

January 28, 2012

Digital videos of old vinyl spinning on a turntable have become widespread lately, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse just took the analog-meets-internet format to another level this weekend: sharing video of their excellent vintage gear setup playing the actual master tape of a 40-minute improvisation through classic live favorites “Cortez the Killer” and “Fuckin’ Up.”

While Young and Co. don’t show up in person for the clip, fans of Harvest and a host of records cut using Young’s notorious Universal Audio 610 console (aka the “Green Board”) should enjoy the piece’s appearance in both visual and auditory form. Not to mention cameos by a slew of other enviable equipment.

This footage comes on the heels of last week’s big news about the legendary lineup reforming for a new studio album and possibly more, which begs the question we like to ask in the early stages of a mysterious project by one of our heroes: What’s he building in there? Well, as Thrasher’s Wheat points out potential teasers abound in today’s clip: “Footage includes lyric sheets for ‘Gallows Pole,’ ‘Clementine,’ ‘This Land,’ ‘Oh Susanna.'”

Exciting stuff. So, without further ado, get ready for what appears to be the imminent return of Young with Crazy Horse above.

Third Man Records Announce Duane Single, School Program

January 28, 2012

Jack White’s Nashville label, Third Man Records, may be best known for its high-profile and occasionally unusual projects, but what makes TMR our favorite active recording company is its dedication to carrying analog technology into the future. (We’ve never mentioned this before, but one of the reasons that this site was named TwentyFourBit is that we feel 24-bit digital recording marks a tipping point in which music recordists will begin to retreat to the more organic methods of yore. That’s a think-piece for a different time, but suffice it to say there’s evidence we’re onto something.) As for the next generation, Third Man have unveiled yet another awesome plan to spread the word…

School Choirs & Bands at Third Man: A Vinyl Recording Experience is a new program offered by the label for school groups to not only tour their live/retail/recording/photo space and learn about the business, but to also record a 7″ single to be pressed in their official school colors. Now if that doesn’t make an emerging artist a fan of analog, I don’t know what will.

For more information and to find out how to set up this incredible opportunity for your student community, check out the official site of Third Man’s partners at Brightspark here.

Now back to the tunes: Detroit’s own Duane The Teenage Weirdo stopped by the HQ of his hometown hero to put a pair of cuts to tape. “Postcard From Hell” b/w “Bubblegum Encore” are available now on iTunes and on vinyl. Described as “the sound of Detroit pared down to a hard beat, feral vocals, synth stabs and real dance intent,” we’ve been spinning the A-side all week and can’t get enough of its 1980s punk spirit channeled through what feels like a completely present-day energy. In short, this stuff conjures a call to action. It also simply rocks. Preview one tune below and pick up a copy at the link above.

Memoryhouse Share “Walk With Me”

January 28, 2012

When Memoryhouse said this will be their year, they weren’t kidding: “Walk With Me,” our second taste of their forthcoming debut LP, The Slideshow Effect, hit the atmosphere today and it’s an incredibly promising preview of what’s to come next month. Replete with warm synthesizer sound-beds, lightly tapped drops of glockenspiel, and a calming vocal part that floats between verse and chorus like a morning fog, the FDA should approve this cut to treat mild, late-week anxiety.

There’s no prescription necessary, however: the download is free, legal, and available over the counter in exchange for an e-mail address below:
