Rufus Wainwright: Out of the Game Tracklist

January 31, 2012

With Rufus Wainwright calling it “the most pop album I’ve ever made” and producer Mark Ronson saying “it’s the best work of my career,” this is one album we’ll definitely need to check out this year: Out of the Game, Wainwright’s 7th studio LP is set for an April 24 arrival date — replete with guest turns from Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, Wilco’s Nels Cline, Martha Wainwright, and Sean Lennon.

In addition to those aforementioned promising quips, Wainwright teased that the album was inspired by a trio of icons: Elton John, Freddie Mercury, and David Bowie. An ambitious undertaking, for sure, but considering Rufus’ vocals virtuosity, the undeniably great Dap-Kings being on board, and the rest of the all-star lineup, we can’t wait to hear what this team have cooked up in the studio. For now, get ready by previewing the tracklist below:

Patrick Watson: “Into Giants”

January 31, 2012

While we brace ourselves for the arrival of Andrew Bird’s new album and tour, let’s get acquainted with his equally talented tourmate, who’s sure to be earning plenty of praise this year: Patrick Watson, a Montreal-based singer-songwriter that’s been on our radar for a few years, will return this spring with an excellent new LP — if the lead single, “Into Giants,” is any indication. Titled Adventures In Your Own Backyard, the 12-track set arrives on April 12, just after a trip to the SXSW festival in Austin, TX and just in time for a string of east coast tour dates with Bird.

“Into Giants,” our first taste from the record, accomplishes a feat we are unable to not love: combining an intimate feel with memorable pop sensibilities before a triumphant, horn-adorned outro takes hold. Many have attempted this type of arrangement with varying degrees of results, but Watson simply makes it look easy here.

We can’t wait to hear more, but in the meantime, set 4.5 minutes aside and give this fine tune a spin below:

Damien Jurado: “Museum of Flight”

January 31, 2012

We’ve been preparing ourselves for the highly anticipated release of Damien Jurado’s latest solo album ever since witnessing a pair of stunning performances caught in nature — “Everything Trying” in the Black Forest and a new tune at Doe Bay — but now the wait is over: Maraqopa, a 10-track collaboration with producer/longtime cohort Richard Swift, is now available to pre-order as part of a number of appetizing bundles here.

Just in case our previous pleas of endorsement for all things Jurado weren’t received, a wonderful preview of the set is here in the form of “Museum of Flight,” not only one of our favorite cuts from the record, but a tune that features a few melodies that might prove to be the most indelible of the year to boot. What’s more, Jurado’s knack for melding heartfelt sensitivity with insightful lyrics that reveal new meaning upon each spin remains beautifully intact.

In short, just press play (or download) and let this track grab you by the ears all on its own:
