The Tallest Man on Earth’s Kristian Matsson returned to the stage last night after a winter spent recording in Sweden, two new songs in tow. Check out audio from his South Africa performance of the excellent “Little Brother” here.
Lambchop: “Gone Tomorrow” Video + Album Stream
After reading through The Guardian‘s new profile on Lambchop mastermind Kurt Wagner this morning, the arrival of this new music video seems particularly apropos: The 7-minute video for Mr. M single “Gone Tomorrow” finds Wagner riding along with wrestler Jocephus Brody to a local Nashville wrestling match against Wolfie D before the band performs and Wagner watches the pair rehearse in the dressing room. From the cinematography to juxtaposition of a poignant tune, the clip can’t help but bring Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler to mind. Why might the profile of an indie alt-country veteran fit this treatment? Upon reading, I can’t help but feel the incredibly consistent singer-songwriter, now a cancer survivor in his mid-50s, has never gotten his due despite receiving plenty of critical praise over the years. Here’s hoping the LP, which is streaming in full above the piece, helps him reach a well-earned wider audience — if not a bit of the late-career glory of Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Either way, there’s great work all-around here, particularly Zack Spiger’s direction, the macho co-stars, and this fine tune itself. Check it out below:
Sun Kil Moon ‘Among the Leaves’ LP Announced
Caldo Verde Records revealed details about Mark Kozelek’s next record as Sun Kil Moon today, in which he’ll follow up 2010’s Admiral Fell Promises with another nylon string guitar-based set: Among the Leaves, 17 original tracks he began recording “impulsively, without second guessing” last fall/winter and completed in January.
The most intriguing bit described in the announcement (via BPM), however, is that the LP is said to display “a more raw and humorous side” of Kozelek’s notoriously melancholic style. One scan through the tracklist and a few song titles should give you an idea of those wonderfully droll cuts on the way, namely opener “I Know It’s Pathetic But That Was The Greatest Night Of My Life,” a tune called “The Moderately Talented Yet Attractive Young Woman vs. The Exceptionally Talented Yet Not So Attractive Middle Aged Man,” and — perhaps my favorite mouthful — “Not Much Rhymes With Everything’s Awesome At All Times.”
May 29 is the release date for the album, which is said to recall the collaborative spirit behind April and Tiny Cities. Plus, bonus tracks are to-be-announced (any fellow fan of Sun Kil Moon’s last accompanying covers EP should be psyched for that). In the meantime, here’s the rest of the official tracklist for your perusal:
