Fiona Apple, Sara Watkins Cover Everly Brothers for RSD

March 22, 2012

Another release was just added to this year’s Record Store Day lineup that caught our eye: “You’re The One I Love,” a rendition of the Everly Brothers’ 1964 single by Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins and former tourmate/longtime collaborator Fiona Apple, will arrive on limited 7″ vinyl as part of Nonesuch’s Side By Side covers series.

While we’ve heard the pair sing together quite a bit of late — most notably, for a take on Dolly Parton classic “Jolene” at Largo last fall — today YouTube has a glimpse of their forthcoming studio duet, which is also set for release on Watkins’ Sun Midnight Sun LP this spring. Apple’s own record is still tentatively due in early summer, but you really can’t go wrong with this high-energy jam in the meantime. Preview it below:

Daniel Rossen: “Golden Mile”

March 21, 2012

We’ve been patiently waiting to rave about “Golden Mile — the closing/half-title track on Daniel Rossen’s debut solo EP — for a few months now (as only unofficial streams were making their way around the web), but this week it has become officially available to preview. While I wasn’t going to namedrop legendary recordings from the early 1970s and late ’60s that spring to mind upon hearing this excellent 5-song set, now that the A.V. Club mentioned George Harrison in their review I’m relieved to know we’re not the only one feeling a strong All Things Must Pass vibe here. Give the whole thing a spin below. Every song is memorable, but yeah: that closing cut’s compressed drum cymbals, Harrison-esque slide-guitar work, and rousing arrangement might make for one of the best tracks of the year so far.
