The Tallest Man on Earth to Release ‘King of Spain’ 12″

February 29, 2012

The Tallest Man on Earth might not be quite ready to unveil that new record in the works (save for a few live previews), but Kristian Matsson won’t be sitting out for this year’s Record Store Day in the meantime. This spring will see the release of The Wild Hunt single “King of Spain” for the first time ever on vinyl, complete with a pair of B-sides and limited to just 2,000 12″ copies.

For the many of us whom have already made the excellent A-side a permanent part of our folk-rock psyche, the B-sides are the real treat: “Graceland,” that’s right a cover of the title track off Paul Simon’s seminal 1986 LP, as well as Tallest Man original rarity “Where I Thought I Met the Angels.”

Immortalizing standout cuts for fans on the best analog format still kicking sounds like a fine gift to tide us over until the next LP. Get in line early, however: this wax will be snatched up quick come April 21.

Dr. John – “Revolution”

February 29, 2012

Jack White isn’t the only Nashville garage-rocker to man the boards for a living legend of late: Dan Auerbach — whose Black Keys now record at their own Tennessee studio — has joined forces with New Orleans icon Dr. John for a new album, Locked Down, arriving in April. Today brings our first taste, “Revolution,” in which the R&B M.D. also known as Mac Rebennack sounds as vital and prepared to bring the house down as ever.

“[T]hat Farfisa solo on ‘Revolution’ – that’s a first-take solo,” Auerbach tells Rolling Stone. “He just goes for it, man. He told me he hadn’t played a Farfisa organ since 1969 when he was with Doug Sahm, and he killed it.” Give it a spin here:

In other Auerbach collaboration news, check out his new tune with Michael Kiwanuka, “Lasan.”

Wilco & Billy Bragg: Mermaid Avenue 3 Tracklist, Details

February 29, 2012

The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration continues on April 21st, as the Guthrie estate will follow up last week’s New Multitudes and last fall’s Note of Hope tribute with Wilco and Billy Bragg’s Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions. In addition to two volumes of previously released music put to Guthrie lyrics and the making-of documentary Man in the Sand, the set contains a third volume comprised of 17 previously unreleased cuts, available separately in digital formats and bundled with the full set on Record Store Day.

While most of these songs will be new to our ears, a few have been performed live or streamed online by Wilco in the past. In fact, “The Jolly Banker” has been shared by the band twice in recent memory: as a fundraiser for the Guthrie archives back in 2009 and as a free stream in recognition of the tune’s prescient subject matter last fall. It’s a great, inspired take, so let’s revisit the track below alongside the tracklist for the latest volume:

Mermaid Avenue: Volume III

01. Bugeye Jim
02. When The Roses Bloom Again
03. Gotta Work
04. My Thirty Thousand
05. Ought To Be Satisfied Now
06. Listening To The Wind That Blows

08. Chain Of Broken Hearts
09. Jailcell Blues
10. Don’t You Marry

12. The Jolly Banker
13. Union Prayer
14. Be Kind To The Boy On The Road
15. Ain’ta Gonna Grieve
16. Tea Bag Blues
