On Friday, ex-Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg surprised us with a brand new solo song — his first since back in 2009. Needless to say, we were both excited for new material, the promise of a new LP possibly forthcoming, and a glimpse into what he’s been up to behind the scenes all these months. Perhaps the lyrics to “My Road Now” will help us clue us in on his next direction. A personal breakup seems to be the most obvious motive for the tune, but we’ll let Mr. Westerberg speak for himself…
Paul Westerberg – My Road Now Lyrics
All you ever wanted to be was brave
Kids couldn’t call you chicken
Hear your name shouted on the street today
It’s guaranteed to make your pulse quicken
And they call your name out from the road
That would mean the road is led to England
So where ever it takes you, yeah, you’re goin’
You can guess but you should already know
This is my road now and you can hit it, baby
I don’t care when you go
This is my road now and you can it honey
No sense in sticking if your heart can’t quicken any better than that
One day they call your name on the street
And your skin is thickened
You won’t know where the money went
You ain’t broke, but you’re badly bent
This is my road now and you can hit it, baby
I don’t care where you go
This is my road now and you can it, honey
Hit is like it owes you a whole lotta money
This is my road now and you can hit it, honey
Hit it like it owes you a whole lotta money
