After reading through The Guardian‘s new profile on Lambchop mastermind Kurt Wagner this morning, the arrival of this new music video seems particularly apropos: The 7-minute video for Mr. M single “Gone Tomorrow” finds Wagner riding along with wrestler Jocephus Brody to a local Nashville wrestling match against Wolfie D before the band performs and Wagner watches the pair rehearse in the dressing room. From the cinematography to juxtaposition of a poignant tune, the clip can’t help but bring Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler to mind. Why might the profile of an indie alt-country veteran fit this treatment? Upon reading, I can’t help but feel the incredibly consistent singer-songwriter, now a cancer survivor in his mid-50s, has never gotten his due despite receiving plenty of critical praise over the years. Here’s hoping the LP, which is streaming in full above the piece, helps him reach a well-earned wider audience — if not a bit of the late-career glory of Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Either way, there’s great work all-around here, particularly Zack Spiger’s direction, the macho co-stars, and this fine tune itself. Check it out below:
