Not only will Johnny Depp star in the new adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary, but the former full-time rocker has recorded music for the film as well, set for release via Lakeshore Records later this month when the Bruce Robinson-directed film hits theaters. While pieces of composer Christopher Young’s score make up the vast majority of the 24-track set, Depp contributed to 4 of the tracklist’s final 5 cuts, which also features a new original tune from the great Patti Smith titled “The Mermaid Song.” Depp performs an instrumental take on Smith’s tune, as well as a song with JJ Holiday called “Kemp in the Village” and two tracks not-so-cryptically credited to the JD Band.
