Florence & the Machine revealed info on the forthcoming release of the follow-up to Lungs, as well as our first taste of the Florence Welch and co.’s sophomore LP: “What the Water Gave Me,” an epic gospel-tinged tune that builds to a climactic finish before reaching well beyond five minute in the coda-comedown. Re-teaming with Paul Epworth (who produced “Cosmic Love,” “Blinding,” and various other cuts off Lungs), the album, which has yet to be titled, is in its final stages of completion.
“With this record, I’ve been able to expand on the idea that I was hitting on towards the end of making Lungs,” Welch told Pitchfork. “It’s like taking everything from the first album that seemed quite separate and making them whole.”
Based on the first tune alone, I’d say she’s on the right path toward breaking the sophomore slump myth. Check out “What the Water Gave Me” below:
