Digital videos of old vinyl spinning on a turntable have become widespread lately, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse just took the analog-meets-internet format to another level this weekend: sharing video of their excellent vintage gear setup playing the actual master tape of a 40-minute improvisation through classic live favorites “Cortez the Killer” and “Fuckin’ Up.”
While Young and Co. don’t show up in person for the clip, fans of Harvest and a host of records cut using Young’s notorious Universal Audio 610 console (aka the “Green Board”) should enjoy the piece’s appearance in both visual and auditory form. Not to mention cameos by a slew of other enviable equipment.
This footage comes on the heels of last week’s big news about the legendary lineup reforming for a new studio album and possibly more, which begs the question we like to ask in the early stages of a mysterious project by one of our heroes: What’s he building in there? Well, as Thrasher’s Wheat points out potential teasers abound in today’s clip: “Footage includes lyric sheets for ‘Gallows Pole,’ ‘Clementine,’ ‘This Land,’ ‘Oh Susanna.'”
Exciting stuff. So, without further ado, get ready for what appears to be the imminent return of Young with Crazy Horse above.
